Teen shot by police in McDonald’s drive thru

Detroit police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Tuesday night at a McDonald’s near 7 Mile and Gratiot.

Police say officers stopped a Chevrolet Malibu in the drive-thru for having an obscured license plate. The stop was part of increased enforcement along Gratiot.

Two women were in the front seats, and an 18-year-old male was in the back seat.

According to police, the female driver consented to a vehicle search. When officers tried to remove the male passenger, he resisted and became combative. Officers attempted to use a Taser.

The man then broke free, ran from the vehicle, and pulled out a handgun. One officer fired a single shot, hitting him in the upper body.

He was taken to the hospital and was listed in critical condition. Police say a firearm was recovered at the scene. No officers or other people were injured.
