Variety reports that Red, White, & Royal Blue 2 has officially been confirmed. It was also announced that the two leads, Galitzine and Perez, would be returning to reprise their roles, while López, who made his feature film directorial debut with the first part, will also be returning to write the screenplay alongside Casey McQuiston.
A Red, White & Royal Blue Sequel Was Almost Inevitable
The Movie Became An Instant Hit
While there was no news or confirmation regarding a sequel for Red, White & Royal Blue months after the release of the romcom, there was always a strong likelihood that Prime Video would eventually greenlight a sequel or a spinoff. This is mainly due to the immense success of the first movie, which quickly went viral upon release and shot up to the top of Amazon Prime Video’s Top 10 movie list, becoming the top-watched film worldwide on the platform in the first three weeks of its release.
While Red, White & Royal Blue became a viral sensation among audiences, eliciting various commentary and analysis on social media, the movie also received fairly positive reviews from critics as well. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Red, White & Royal Blue holds an approval rating of 76%, with many critics commending the movie’s much-needed representation of queer romance and the lead actors’ brilliant chemistry and performances, which endeared a lot of viewers to the movie.
Additionally, just before the release of Red, White & Royal Blue, López revealed that he’d be very interested in working on another movie, be it a sequel or a spinoff. It must, however, be noted that Casey McQuiston has yet to write a follow-up to her 2019 bestseller, so it will be interesting to see what direction the author and Lopez both take this time around. The novel does have an expanded edition that reveals what happens to the couple, but it is unknown if the sequel will base its story around that.
