Judge shocked after Detroit police officer shows up in boxers for court case

A Detroit police officer left courtroom viewers stunned after appearing in boxers during a Zoom hearing before Judge Sean Perkins at Detroit’s 36th District Court on Monday afternoon.

The hearing involved a reckless driving and drag racing case that occurred in May. A female defendant in that case had been issued a citation and appeared for a plea deal when the officer joined the virtual session.

Video obtained & verified by MDN shows the officer sitting during the proceeding, unaware that his camera revealed he was not fully dressed and in his boxers. “You got some pants on,” Judge Perkins asked.

The 36th District Court’s official Zoom policy requires participants to be “dressed appropriately.

Metro Detroit News reached out to the Detroit Police Department:

“The Detroit Police Department requires its officers to represent themselves in a dignified and professional manner while attending court proceedings” said Detroit Police Chief, Todd Bettison. “The involved officer’s actions are not representative of the professionalism of this department and will be appropriately addressed to maintain the public confidence and efficient operation of this department.”

“Our apologies are hereby extended to the judges and staff of the court, as well as anyone else who may have been in attendance during this incident.”
