According to police, Iryna was seated quietly, listening to music on her phone, when she was fatally stabbed.

Authorities identified the suspect as Decarlos Brown Jr., who was quickly taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. Investigators stated that there was no prior interaction between the two. Brown, who has a record of previous arrests and reported mental health challenges, has been denied bond and ordered to undergo a competency evaluation before his next court appearance.

The release of train surveillance footage by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) on September 5 sparked widespread grief and anger on social media.
